Maroon 5's song "Payphone" is basically talking about a love that didn't last. It's as if you wanted the relationship so much but you know it's not going to last.

I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it's all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

If "Happy Ever Afters" did exist,
I would still be holding you like this
[Video:] All those fairy tales are full of shit
[Album:] All those fairy tales are full of it.
[Video:] One more fucking love song, I'll be sick.
[Album:] One more stupid love song, I'll be sick

In this song, the tone is more so sad and upsetting. Because of the fact that this song is a break up song, I would say that it has pathos. The reason why i say this is because in this song, one person what the relationship to work while the other person whats to move on. So because no one would like to go through something like that, it kind of makes you feel bad for the person.
